mini-Zenith mini-Zenith turntable uses a single-ball bearing to achieve mechanical suspension. This turntable can reproduce a very natural sound and is one of the best high-end turntables available on the market. The movement of the plate is maintained at a constant rate by a very low-torque DC motor using dental floss. Because of this, most of the speed of the plate is determined by the rotational inertia – not by the motor. Generally, there is some conflict between exact speed control and good rotational inertia – it is not easy to get good balance between these two requirements. Although some direct-drive motors can control the plate at very exact speeds, they cannot produce a naturally smooth reproduction of the vinyl record. The lack of sufficient rotational inertia means that, although the speed is very exact, the sound reproduced from this plate is not good. When a plate is driven by a belt (e.g. plastic or flossed) the musical quality is better. In contrast to the rotational inertia of the plate, the softer the belt and the lesser the motor torque, the greater the natural quality of the vinyl reproduction – all the better for the audiophile. However, when this mechanism is typically used, the control of the speed is not easy. The mini-Zenith turntable uses a unique single-chip micro-computer speed feedback control system.
