Equipment Review
The latest product of mini Zenith is mz-L3. From the number of “L3” (Loudspeaker 3), we can guess that it’s the third loudspeaker product of mini Zenith. The appearance and size of previous mz-L2 had been developed to the full according to current standards, together with Doctor Chen’s perseverance in the individual speakers being used, the only solution is to increase the number of speakers and improve sound pressure, powerfulness and energy. Using speaker arrangement of mirror symmetry to develop new products is the common yet reasonable idea of different loudspeaker brands. However, I am deeply shocked when I first see mz-L3. There are three reasons for this: 1st, the loudspeaker is extremely huge; 2nd, why such a huge loudspeaker can be so exquisite in appearance; 3rd, why this loudspeaker is so foursquare with no specialty at all, which cannot equal to the previous creative works of Doctor Chen…… However, only after further study, I find the above doubts are totally unnecessary. Actually, mz-L3 is not only the fruit of Doctor Chen’s full thoughts and great exertions, but also the pursuit of faithful regeneration of music. In fact, the foursquare mz-L3 has super complicated inside structure, with thorough considerations to the rigidity and acoustic features of loudspeaker. The elegant appearance makes it easier to match your living environment as a piece of exquisite furniture. Perhaps you also feel puzzled as I do why mz-L3 has not follow the “fashion” of contract of high and middle frequency when you first see mz-L3, however, Doctor Chen explains that though this practice can reach the consistence of time and phase, the irregular front baffle brings a lot more problems as diffraction and interference. Besides, mini Zenith loudspeakers are unique all over the world for the core-concept of full-range speakers. The phase issue can be easily handled through crossover network. That’s why Doctor Chen chooses this practice which has more pros than cons. Actually, the previous mz-L1 and mz-L3 loudspeakers can both be equipped with the passive subwoofer, forming the four-piece structure. Apart from the low frequency of 40Hz and below, the overall sound has become quite balanced. The works exhibited in the Ten Shiang Room on the 4th floor of Kaohsiung Audio Exhibition are the best examples. Of course, with the brand concept of “Never Compromise”, mini Zenith would never be complacent or cease to move forward. Since, November 2009, Doctor Chen began to think about how to make mini Zenith loudspeakers perform more perfectly. Compared with one core Diatone P-610 Signature for each channel of mz-L1/mz-L2, mz-L3 has four for each channel. When listening, the first thing I notice is that it brings more meticulous sound intensity. Even for the simple human singing voice or violin solo, it can also display more detail and 3D audio effects. On the other hand, the mini Zenith loudspeakers do have extremely sufficient audio details, but mz-L3’s performance has been improved a lot from this meaning. Every element is displayed vividly and directly, no matter the description of sense of space or the expression of instruments or human voice. The slightest dynamics are conveyed right on the beat. I suppose it owes to the parallel operation of four Diatone P-610 Signatures – the energy needed for each speaker is only 1/4 of mz-L1/mz-L2 under the same sound pressure, so the slight sound signal can be displayed more completely and vividly.
Listening to “Misa Criolla” of Jose Carreras - the sound of heavy drums coming from the profound distance, even the hierarchy of far and near and the mouth shape of voice are extremely definite. It seems the sound is echoing in the Santuario de la Bien Aparecida of Spain which is place where “Misa Criolla” is recorded – feeling as if the loudspeakers do not exist. What’s more, mz-L3 has no crossover for the frequency range between 130Hz to 7.2kHz, which helps the precise display of the tone color and expression of instruments. For the album “Asian Roots” from Denon, which is the one of the favorite testing albums for many audio fans, the slight tone color resonance differences of various bamboo instruments are expressed more definite and clear at mz-L3, without any fuzziness, feeling more like bamboos. But how about playing live jazz performance on mz-L3? Let’s try “Take Five” in the classical album “Time Out” of the Band “Dave Brubeck” recorded by Columbia Legacy in 1959 and collected in 2nd Album of Denmark DALI Demonstration CDs – the jazz tomtom, piano, alto saxophone and bass interact passionately. mz-L3 gives out uncompressed dynamics and lighting speed, turning the listening room into a hot live pub. I once thought the huge body of mz-L3 may block the sound field somehow, however, after listening to “Take Five”, I know I was over-worried – the copper cymbals outside the edge of the left loudspeaker, the specific image of jazz tomtom that stays at the left of the sound field, the piano, alto saxophone pipe resonance and plucking of guitar at the right of the sound field are all located as precisely as those of the bookshelf type small loudspeakers. Of course, facing such a huge thing as mz-L3, the tests of grand symphony and music of powerful impact should not be neglected. mz-L3 is able to open a wide and profound platform with clear depths to allow clear and precise location of various instruments – the depth difference between instruments in the front and those in the back and the tight tension of strings are especially impressive. Besides, the low and super-low frequencies full of hierarchies and sense of quality are in my expectation, however, the flexibility and speed of mz-L3 are much better than mz-L1/mz-L2. I think it is because that the two 10” low frequency speakers on each side of mz-L3 only have to handle the low frequency below 130Hz. It’s really amazing that when playing the most passionate part of “Sister Drum”, mz-L3 can still handle it calmly and easily. If I’m asked to conclude my understanding to mz-L3, I would say mini Zenith mz-L3 is the breakthrough that merges handiness with preciseness, and exquisiteness with grandness. In the past, the fans who pursued precise sound field and exquisite expressions often had to give in to the small loudspeakers, because when the huge cabinet brings grandness and energy, the liveliness and directness are also sacrificed because of the complicated crossover and interference of many speakers. However, mini Zenith mz-L3 realizes the two through unique full-range sound structure. Mini Zenith mz-L3 will be exhibited publicly in Kaohsiung Audio Exhibition in March 2011. Before that, Doctor Chen will keep doing some slight adjustments. From my understanding to Doctor Chen, I’m sure the overall performance of mz-L3 will be perfect. So let’s wait to verify my listening descriptions in herein. From mz-L1/mz-L2 to mz-L3, mini Zenith definitely made a significant step forward in the field of loudspeaker. Measuring with the strictest standard, there is some space to enhance the sense of energy of mz-L3 in the frequency range below extremely low frequency (lower than 30Hz), however, from the aspect of enjoying music, mz-L3 has the ability to bring various kinds of music “right to your ears”. With Doctor Chen’s passions to sound equipments and music, creativeness, wisdom and intelligence, and unflagging pursuit to perfectness, the whole set of mini Zenith products has the strength to compete with Hi-End, the global famous audio brand. I believe in the future not only the loudspeakers but also other products of mini Zenither will draw more attention of the industry and cause more and more uproars in the industry. I also hope mini Zenith will march to international soon so that we can see another “The Proud of Taiwan”.
Left image: the depth of mini Zenith mz-L3 loudspeaker reaches 90cm (40cm wide and 176cm high). Most of the volume inside the cabinet is taken up by the two 10” low frequency speakers. The four middle frequency speakers also have their own independent chambers, with the volume of chamber precisely calculated and made in pyramid shape. The surface of loudspeaker is as smooth as a mirror, with 20 processes of painting and polishing done by the professional painting plant that paints luxury yachts and manufactures fist class furniture for Japan. Only the painting process takes two months! Right image: there are four SUS stands on the bottom of mz-L3 loudspeaker which provide stable support for the cabinet. The side plates and front baffle are decorated with different wood skin with a layer of black hard wood between the two. Actually, the front baffle is 60mm thick. The part exposed outside is only half of the thickness. (Note: this is only the extract of the article by Mori.
